Preparation is key when it comes to renting a car in Costa Rica.

Research and choose a reputable car rental company that offers reliable vehicles and comprehensive insurance coverage. It’s important to know what type of insurance you’ll need.

Be aware that some roads in Costa Rica may require a 4×4 vehicle, so consider your itinerary and choose a suitable vehicle accordingly. 

Ensure that the rental car is in good condition, with properly functioning lights, brakes, and tires.

Lastly, have emergency contact information, including the car rental company’s contact details and the local emergency services, readily available. By taking the time to prepare thoroughly before renting a car and hitting the road in Costa Rica, you can ensure a safe, enjoyable, and hassle-free driving experience.

Driver’s license

If you plan to travel to Costa Rica, you don’t necessarily need an International Driver’s License but make sure you have the correct driver’s license for the type of vehicle you want to drive.

The law allows foreign tourists to drive the type of vehicle indicated on their driver’s license. So if you have a B or generic driver’s license, you don’t need to worry.

However, if you do not have such a license, keep in mind that until 2017, B-1 license holders were required by law to drive motorcycles. However, with a change in legislation this year, holders of foreign or domestic driver’s licenses can only drive the vehicles indicated on their licenses.

Always make sure to have your passport, insurance, and any other documents required by law on hand.

Driving laws in Costa Rica

There are several traffic laws and rules of the road in Costa Rica. You must obey these rules at all times while driving.

Wearing seat belts is required by law. It specifically states that all occupants in the vehicle must wear seat belts.

Obey zone and traffic signs for speed limits, seen on traffic signs. On the highway, the maximum speed is 60 kilometers per hour (km/h) and the minimum speed is 40 km/h. The speed limit is 40 km/h in urban areas and 25 km/h in areas near schools, hospitals, or clinics.

Driving on the beach or under the influence of alcohol is prohibited. You can’t drive on the beach without other routes connecting two destinations. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is also completely prohibited. Traffic police has the power to test drivers for alcohol.

Another rule of the road in Costa Rican traffic is to always drive defensively. Drivers should be aware of other drivers around them and slow down if necessary. If you see a car coming towards you, pull off the road and let it pass before returning to the road.

Drive Safely

Driving in Costa Rica is not as easy as driving in the United States. It takes time to get used to, especially when you’re new to the country. It can be an exhilarating adventure, so it is important to prioritize safety at all times. The roads can be challenging, with narrow, winding mountain roads, unpredictable weather, and local driving customs that may differ from what you’re used to.

However, with the right knowledge and precautions, you can ensure a smooth and safe driving experience in this beautiful country.

Driving safely in Costa Rica requires careful preparation and awareness of the unique driving conditions in the country. First and foremost, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the local traffic laws, including speed limits, road signs, and driving customs. Be prepared for narrow roads, steep inclines, and sharp curves, especially when navigating mountainous areas.

Always wear your seatbelt, and ensure that all passengers in the vehicle are also properly restrained.

Keep a safe distance from other vehicles and watch out for pedestrians, cyclists, and wildlife that may cross the road unexpectedly.

Be cautious of changing weather conditions, especially during the rainy season, as roads can become slippery and visibility may be reduced.

Avoid driving at night, if possible, as roads may be poorly lit and signage may be less visible.

Additionally, be aware of the local driving etiquette, which may include frequent use of horns, passing on curves, and yielding to larger vehicles.

Lastly, consider renting a 4×4 vehicle for better maneuverability on uneven or unpaved roads, and always have a reliable GPS or map handy to navigate through unfamiliar areas.

By following these tips and being vigilant on the road, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable driving experience in Costa Rica.

Know Where You’re Going

Knowing where you’re going is essential for safe driving in Costa Rica. If you don’t, you might end up lost or stranded somewhere.

Before hitting the road, plan your route in advance and familiarize yourself with the destination. Ensure that you have a reliable GPS or a detailed map, as some rural areas may have limited or no cell phone coverage.

Be aware that road signage in Costa Rica may not always be clear or consistent, so it’s important to pay attention to landmarks and use multiple sources of navigation.

Avoid relying solely on GPS as it may not always provide accurate directions. If driving in urban areas, be prepared for congestion and heavy traffic, especially during peak hours. It’s also helpful to have a general understanding of the local geography, including the location of major cities, national parks, and tourist attractions.

By knowing where you’re going and being well-prepared with directions, you can confidently navigate the roads of Costa Rica and ensure a smooth and enjoyable driving experience.
